***Documentary Screening of A Small Act***

***Documentary Screening of A Small Act***
Missed the screening at this year's HotDocs festival?  You don't want
to miss this opportunity to check out A Small Act on campus! As a part
of Hart House Social Justice Committee's Conscious Activism Doc
Festival, there will be a screening of A Simple Act, directed by
Jennifer Arnold.

Trailer:
Synopsis: For years, Swedish schoolteacher Hilde Back sent $15 a term
to pay for a child's education in Kenya. Decades later, her good deed
pays her and the world a most unexpected dividend: Chris Mburu. Now a
Harvard graduate, this sponsored child sets out not only to meet the
woman who inspired his career as a UN human rights attorney, but to
pay her generosity forward. Founding a scholarship program in Back's
name, Mburu returns to Kenya to attempt the same transformation for a
new generation, but an embattled school system and a runaway political
crisis throw unexpected obstacles in his way. Inspiring at every step,
A Small Act is a testament to the exponential power of kindness. -
Myrocia Watamaniuk

Screening of A Simple Act followed by a discussion led by volunteers
who have been to Kenya to help develop the education there, including
EBB's own Anita Hayhoe.

Taught or volunteered in projects overseas? We want *YOU* to blog for us!

We want *YOU* to blog for us!

Taken a week or few... or a summer... or even a year off to volunteer/teach in communities outside of the city or overseas?
We want *YOU* to blog for us!

This blog is a response to the growing interest students and graduates have in teaching overseas or helping out with development projects.
This blog, however, needs content - driven by *YOU*, the one with experience to share with others!

If you're interested in blogging for us, here are
some basic guidelines for blog postings:

Please include
- name of agency/organization you volunteered with
- if applicable, a brief description of the application/volunteer recruitment process
- location
- duration of volunteer work
- and of course, your described experiences and insights gained. Also, feel free to embellish the post with images (description or actual photos) of the community you volunteered in.
- If you wish, you may include a brief author bio to accompany your post

There is no length limit, but if your piece is quite lengthy, you can post in installments.
Please e-mail your finished piece and any additional attachments or links to media to ebb.uoft@gmail.com .
Your post will be featured on our blog (http://ebbut.posterous.com), which has received more than 500 hits since it went live less than a month ago!

Want to be involved with a working group?

(Working group as defined here.)

A message brought to us by the Public Engagement Working Group:

Public Engagement Working Group Meeting – November 4th

The next Public Engagement Working Group meeting will be held on Thursday, November 4th, at 4:30 p.m. at TakingITGlobal (19 Duncan Street, Suite 505, Toronto, ON).

Darren Brown, a youth worker at St. Alban’s Boys and Girls club will be presenting a case study on “the challenges and best practices in engaging inner city youth in Toronto”.  Darren has worked directly with inner city youth in Toronto for the past 4 years and was one of the co-facilitators for OCIC’s Diaspora Youth Speak, a multi-media arts project engaging inner city youth in global issues.  The case study is meant to provide a glimpse into what are the concerns, thoughts, and feelings of inner city teenagers, and what the challenges and strategies are for engages them in global issues.

Darren is running a weekly social and global issues drop-in program for ‘Tweens’ at St. Alban’s Boys and Girls club (www.stalbansclub.ca) this fall.

Working Group format
In terms of the format of future meetings, the working group will be meeting on a quarterly basis, with a focus on networking and capacity-building of group members through sharing of best practices or inviting external speaker.  Based on feedback from members, we will also be broadening our subject matter to Public Engagement.  Jia Lu will act a chair for the group in the interim, until interested candidates step forward.

For those of you cannot attend in person but would like to attend remotely via Skype or other platforms, please contact Jia at public.engagement@ocic.on.ca / 416.972.6303.

Do drinks and development mix?

An event up our alley, brought to us by the OCIC (Ontario Council for International Cooperation):

Join OCIC for our monthly "Development Drinks" gathering on October 7th, starting at 5:30 p.m., at the Bedford Academy (36 Prince Arthur Avenue, Toronto).

"Development Drinks" is a casual gathering of people and organizations interested in or working within the international development sector.  This is an opportunity to chat, debate, socialize and connect with others who are passionate about working, volunteering and learning about the sector.
